Riverhead News: Thelma Booker to chair annual photography contest

Carmine Cioffi of Knights of Columbus Chapter 928 announced the awarding of $500 scholarships to essay contest winners Chris Atkinson and Caroline McKay.

Their essays addressed “The Responsibility of a Catholic Citizen in a Free Society.” The awards will go toward their Catholic school tuition. Congratulations!

Riverhead Free Library’s Battle of the Books team “Armedius Academy” placed seventh out of 41 libraries at SUNY/Stony Brook on Aug. 1. The members who recently joined the team did a great job, considering how tough the competition is. They are: Emma Eager, Ravi Manucha, Kate Foley, Dominic Bossey, Madison Toolan, John Foley and alternate Cora Purcell. Other members include: Bianca Bossey, Lila Bowe, Kellia Daniel, Morgan Dunn, Madison Geldert, Lily Kutner, Ryken Kutner, Khushi Patel, Kaitlin Schmidt, Danica Teresky and Skylar Wicklund. Assistant coach Annie Kromhout and Joyce Rienzo loved working with this enthusiastic group. Congratulations to all!

VFW Post 2476 on Parkway Street in Riverhead will host its annual chicken barbecue Saturday, Sept. 19, from 3 to 6 p.m. All are welcome. The menu includes chicken, potato, corn on the cob, and beer or soda. Cost: $15 for adults; $5 for children (includes a hot dog, soda and corn on the cob). Tickets can be purchased by calling 727-2229. There will also be raffles.

The Friends of Riverhead Free Library will hold their 50th annual photography contest, with Thelma Booker as chairwoman. Categories include: animals, landscapes, nature, people, abstractions/manipulations, flowers/gardens, and structures/still life. Entries must be brought to the library’s art gallery on Saturday, Sept. 26, between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. For more information, call Jane Hill at 727-3228, ext 168. A reception will be held Friday, Oct. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. Awards for first, second and third place will be presented in each category. A gift certificate will also be awarded for Best in Show and Friends Choice, selected by the Friends of RFL. Grab your camera and capture some summer moments!

St. Isidore School will host an open house Sunday, Aug. 23, from 3 to 5 p.m. All are invited to take a look at the school.

The Riverhead Moose Lodge will host a “Taste of Carnival” Brazilian dinner/dance on Saturday, Aug. 22. Tickets, $20, includes dinner, dancing and entertainment by DJ/singer JB. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For tickets or more information, call 727-6667 or 779-2694.
