Flanders News: Be patient while parents take photos at bus stop

Happy September, everyone. What a great summer! I hope you enjoyed yours also.

This weekend is Labor Day weekend and like many, I’m going to enjoy the extra day off. Many students, including my daughter Kaitlyn, have already left for college. Our local schools also start classes soon. During September, please leave a little bit more time to get to where you need to go. School bus dropoff and pickup times fall mainly between 6:30 and 9 a.m. and 2 and 5 p.m., when parents, children and bus drivers are getting their routines settled. Also, many photos are being taken on the first day of school as some kids get on the bus for the first time. Please be patient if you have to wait a couple of minutes for a bus. The first day of school is a special moment that only comes once a year.

Flanders Road is being worked on during the overnight hours starting this week. Please be very careful of the workers and lane shifts. Be prepared to stop or be delayed. I am very grateful the roadwork is being done at night, otherwise could you imagine the traffic? Let’s give the workers a break and try to avoid the area so they can get the work done quicker.

On Friday, Sept. 11, students in grades 6-12 will have the opportunity to showcase their musical talents by performing live at Moe’s Southwest Grill in Hampton Bays (252 West Montauk Highway) from 7 to 9 p.m. Those who are interested should preregister by calling the Youth Bureau at 702-2432. Admission is free!

The Town of Southampton Youth Bureau is now accepting registrations for Act TWO. This event is open to teens in grades 8-12 who have always wanted to act but didn’t feel comfortable trying out. Participants work with other youth to decide which important messages others should know about and how to succeed as a teenager in our community. Through writing and performing, students will have an opportunity to teach others what they have learned. Classes are held on Thursdays beginning Sept. 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hampton Bays Community Center, 25 Ponquogue Ave. Advance registration is required. That’s all for this week. I missed the Rubber Duck Race this past weekend as I had to take my daughter back to Oneonta. I will share the results in my next column. It was a gorgeous day for a duck race and I heard everyone had a great time.
