A Sound Beach man and beloved security guard at Shoreham-Wading River High School was killed in a car accident Saturday morning, authorities said.

According to a news release from Suffolk County police, 49-year-old Richard Cambria was driving his 2011 Dodge pickup truck south on Islip Drive when the truck went off the road and hit a telephone pole and a retaining wall about 11:50 a.m.

Sound Beach Fire Department volunteers took Mr. Cambria to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

Shoreham-Wading River superintendent Steven Cohen confirmed that Mr. Cambria had worked at the school, and was also as a driver’s ed teacher. He added the “terrible event” would hit many in the community hard.

Within hours of the police news release, tributes sprung up online to the beloved security guard.

“It’s so sad that he’s gone,” SWR grad Michael McCartney Wind wrote on the SWRWeekly Facebook page. “He was a great security guard. You’ll truly be missed, Rich.”
