A bicyclist was struck by a car on Sound Avenue Tuesday afternoon and had to be rushed to the hospital by helicopter, authorities on the scene of the crash said.

Police on scene would not say how seriously the bicyclist had been injured.

The victim, who was riding his bike on the south side of the road near the intersection of Northville Turnpike, was hit by a white Chevrolet sedan turning left onto Northville Turnpike about 12:30 p.m., police on the scene said.

The driver was uninjured and was not issued a summons, police said.

Riverhead firefighters and ambulance volunteers arrived on scene to treat the victim and close Sound Avenue while police investigated the crash. The victim was taken to Stony Brook University hospital.

The crumpled bicycle had been tossed to the side of the road near the scene of the crash.
