Football: Wildcats shut out Port Jefferson

Life is good for Shoreham-Wading River High School football these days.

The Wildcats just keep winning. It’s a good habit to get into.

“Things are going well,” agreed Shoreham’s coach, Matt Millheiser.

The 6-0 Wildcats maintained their undefeated record Saturday with a 35-0 blanking of host Port Jefferson in a Suffolk County Division IV game. It was their third shutout of the season. The Wildcats have outscored the six teams they have played by 228-28.

It was the 18th straight win for the defending Long Island Class IV champions. They have scored at least 34 points in 14 consecutive games.

Port Jefferson dropped to 2-3.

“We played pretty stingy defense today and it wasn’t just the first team. I thought it was a complete team effort,” said Millheiser, who played all 38 of his players. He added, “I like that everybody contributed.”

As is his style, Chris Rosati did a lot with a modest number of carries. The senior running back picked up 122 yards from only four rushing attempts, two of which went for touchdowns, a 65-yarder and a 40-yarder. They were his 17th and 18th rushing touchdowns of the season.

For the season, Rosati has 863 yards on the ground from 65 carries for an impressive average of 13.3 yards per carry.

The Wildcats jumped to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, the first two touchdowns coming from Chris Gray (a 41-yard punt return) and Jon Constant (from a pass of over 30 yards by Jason Curran).

Chris Sheehan also ran in a touchdown for the Wildcats, who did all of their scoring in the first half.

Millheiser said he wants his players to focus on continuing to get better.

“They work very hard and with their preparation and hard work, they expect to put in a good effort,” he said. “Hopefully they keep that hunger. You want them to continue to progress, even if it’s a little thing. Those little details, against the better teams, it’s going to matter.”
