Shoreham-Wading River athletic director Mark Passamonte was honored last week with a proclamation from Legislator Sarah Anker for his effort to “reform sports safety measures with the Shoreham-Wading River School District.”

Mr. Passamonte recently made a push for the district to increase the number of automated external defibrillator machines on the school’s campus. In August, the school board agreed to purchase 24 additional AEDs to increase the total to 40 across the district’s four buildings. Most of the school’s current 16 AEDs will likely need to be replaced at the end of this school year, Mr. Passamonte said at an August board meeting.

The investment is expected to cost between $30,000 and $40,000.

Mr. Passamonte received the proclamation at the General Legislative Meeting in Riverhead Tuesday.

“Mark has worked diligently to advocate for reforming sports safety measures within the Shoreham-Wading River School District,” Ms. Anker said in a statement.

The push for more AEDs came on the heels of a Shoreham student needing to be revived after getting struck in the chest by a baseball in May. Jack Crowley’s heart stopped and the 15-year-old was saved by a retired police officer from Shoreham who quickly used an AED to revive Jack.

Mr. Passamonte has been the athletic director at Shoreham since January 2014.
