Suffolk County police’s homicide and arson squads are looking into the death of a man whose body was found burning in the woods in Manorville.

Investigators haven’t identified the body yet, and a news release sent early Friday made no mention of the man’s cause of death.

Police said a passing motorist noticed a fire on the side of the road while driving on Wading River-Manor Road and discovered it was a burning body. The witness called 911 about 1:45 p.m., and Riverhead police were dispatched to the scene.

Suffolk County investigators were also sent to the area.

The body will now be taken to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy, police said.

Riverhead police chief David Hegermiller said Thursday the site of the discovery had been treated as a crime scene while police continued their investigation. The investigation is ongoing, county police said.
