Girls Volleyball: Doorhy’s setting leads Tuckers over Monarchs

Glens Falls, N.Y., is the ultimate destination, and the Mattituck High School girls volleyball team is determined to show that there is more than one way to get there.

Last year the Tuckers reached the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships in Glens Falls for the fourth time in five years, largely on the hitting ability of Emilie Reimer. Reimer has since graduated and is now playing for SUNY/Cobleskill. Where has that left the Tuckers?

Would you believe in a better situation than they were in a year ago?

It’s true. The Tuckers have a better record than they did at this time last year, and look like they have the top seed in the Suffolk County Class C Tournament wrapped up.

Last year’s team needed to petition its way into the playoffs before gaining momentum in the playoffs and reaching the state semifinal pool.

What the Tuckers lost in Reimer they seem to have made up for in better all-around balance and fine setting by Carly Doorhy. That formula worked well for them once again on Monday when the Tuckers won their final home regular-season match, dispatching Bishop McGann-Mercy, 25-15, 25-11, 25-19.

It was senior day for the Tuckers, whose nine seniors were announced by coach Frank Massa and presented with flowers in a ceremony before the match.

The Tuckers (14-2, 9-2 League VII), wearing their blue and gold camouflage shirts, looked in firm control from the start as they went about winning their sixth straight match.

Doorhy, one of the seniors, played superbly. Not only did she account for 16 assists, but she also had eight service aces, six dinks and two kills.

Perhaps the biggest beneficiary of Doorhy’s setting was Kathryn Zaloom, who put away seven kills.

The Tuckers had 16 aces, four times as many as the Monarchs (3-9, 2-8), who were run by their assistant coach, Jeff Treleyicz. The team’s head coach, Jamie Calandro, was out of state, traveling home from a wedding, said Treleyicz.

McGann’s Mercy’s setter, Mia Behrens, finished with 12 assists and worked well with fellow junior Kathleen Dewitt, who had seven kills.

It was the fourth loss in five matches for the Monarchs, who like the Tuckers last year would need Section XI to look favorably upon a petition to get into the playoffs.

The Tuckers have two regular-season matches remaining at Mount Sinai on Thursday and at Hampton Bays on Oct. 26.
