Martha L. Tooker

Former Baiting Hollow resident Martha L. Tooker died Sept. 11 at her home in Centerville, Mass., on Cape Cod. She was 91.

Ms. Tooker was the eldest of seven children born to Waino and Martha Ojala of West Barnstable, Mass. She graduated Barnstable High School in 1942 and Mount Auburn School of Nursing in Cambridge, Mass., in 1945.

From 1945 to 1947, Ms. Tooker served in the U.S. Navy, where, family members said, she met and fell in love with Navy corpsman Wilson C. Tooker. The couple married in 1947 and went on to have three children. They resided in Batavia, N.Y., before relocating to Baiting Hollow in 1972.

After moving to Baiting Hollow, Dr. and Ms. Tooker set up a medical practice, which served the community until Dr. Tooker’s death in 1976. Ms. Tooker continued to live in Baiting Hollow until 1982. She was a member of Baiting Hollow Congregational Church.

She was predeceased by her son John in 2008 and is survived by sons Wayne, of Harwich, Mass., and Matthew, of Centerville, Mass.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 24, at Baiting Hollow Congregational Church. All who knew Ms. Tooker are welcome to attend.
