Girls Volleyball: SWR punches ticket into postseason

Hailey Wehr waited four years for this moment. It was fitting that with one point separating Shoreham-Wading River from clinching a trip to the postseason, the ball found its way into the senior’s hands.

The Wildcats’ middle hitter, whose mix of ferocious hits and soft taps helped carry the team to this moment, served the final point in a 25-18 Game 4 win over Mount Sinai.

It capped a 3-1 victory for the Wildcats in the final match of the regular season Friday night at Shoreham-Wading River High School. Both the Wildcats and Mustangs needed a victory to advance into the postseason.

This day, which started with a school pep rally and continued with a pregame ceremony for Shoreham’s seven seniors, belonged to the Wildcats.

Shoreham prevailed 25-14, 23-25, 25-15, 25-18 for the Wildcats’ second win over Mount Sinai this year.

The Wildcats finished 6-6 in League VI for third place behind Elwood John Glenn and Sayville. The Class B playoffs are now scheduled to begin Nov. 2.

It’ll be the first time in the playoffs for any of Shoreham’s players, including Wehr, who first joined the varsity as a freshman.
