Gloria G. Clemans

Gloria G. (Greene) Clemans of Riverhead passed away at her home Dec. 6, 2015, at the age of 91. 

She was born Dec. 15, 1923, in Huntington to Henry C. Greene and Sylvia Elizabeth Hurd.

Gloria worked as a clerk for Meyer’s Department Store on Main Street in Riverhead and as a clerk for the Riverhead County Center Surrogate’s Court. She was also a homemaker.

Gloria was very involved in the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, for which she was a puppy walker nine times and a caretaker for female breeding dogs three times. Along with her husband, Justin, she was program manager and instrumental in the steering committee for the Community Center for the Blind and Sighted in Riverhead.

She loved to research the Greene family tree and host reunions at her house, with over 100 relatives each time. She was also a lifelong Methodist and member of Riverhead United Methodist Church, where she had been mission chairwoman.

Gloria won ribbons at the Riverhead Country Fair for growing Greening apples and for her applesauce cake.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Diana Cheshire (Ray) of Calverton; son Ted (Betsy), of Riverhead; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Justin Clemans, in 1977; her son Richard (Nancy), in 2009; her sisters, Marie Storey and Gladys Joscelyn; her brother, Charles Greene; and one great-grandchild.

Visiting hours for Gloria will be Wednesday, Dec. 9, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home, 406 E. Main St., Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. Enrique Lebron of Riverhead United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment to follow service at Northport Rural Cemetery in Northport.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Riverhead United Methodist Church, 204 East Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901 or to the Guide Dog Foundation, 371 East Jericho Tpke., Smithtown, NY 11787.
