Man mugged downtown Friday night; police seek info

Police are again searching for information following another mugging in the downtown Riverhead area.

According to Riverhead police, a man alerted a patrol officer around 8:50 p.m. that his friend was being assaulted by several other men near the corner of Maple Avenue and Second Street.

When police arrived on scene, the assailants had fled on foot, taking the victim’s cash and cell phone.

The victim, a Hispanic male, had described the men who assaulted him as all black males between the ages of 19 and 20 years old. One was allegedly dressed in all black and another was wearing red pants. The victim said he had been punched and kicked repeatedly about the face during the assault.

Police searched the area, though none of the assailants were found.

Friday’s group assault was the second in nearly a week in the area. Last Thursday, another Hispanic man reported being mugged by a group of people — two black men and two black females — near the rail road tracks on Osborn Avenue. No arrests have been announced in relation to that attack.

And last year, a string of assaults had occurred on or near the railroad tracks — often times including Hispanic victims.

The investigation remains ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed the incident or may have information about the assault is asked to call Riverhead Detectives at 727-4500.
