John J. Herbst

John J. “Jack” Herbst, 72, of Riverhead died Dec. 13 at his home.

The son of Elizabeth (Minogue) and William Herbst, he was born Oct. 28, 1943, in Brooklyn.

John served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964, achieving the rank of private first class. He retired as a detective sergeant with the New York City Transit Police.

John was the beloved husband of Laraine (née Guerra); the dear father of Michelle (David), Dina Hannon (David) and John (Genelle); the brother of William Herbst OFM and Michael and the loving grandfather of five.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Dec. 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, at Saint John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead.

In lieu of flowers donations to the Lucille A. Fennessy Pulmonary Research Fund in Mount Sinai Hospital would be appreciated.
