Cops: Man beaten, mugged over the weekend in Riverhead

Middle Road west of Doctor's Path

A 46-year-old Hispanic man was mugged over the weekend and Riverhead Town police are asking for the public’s help in the investigation, according to a press release.

The robbery took place sometime between Saturday 11 p.m. and Sunday 5 a.m. “in the area of Middle Road west of Doctors Path” in Riverhead, police said.

The victim suffered lacerations to his face and reported three to four people beat him and stole his wallet, as well as $500 in cash, a cell phone and personal effects, officials said.

A separate mugging was reported Friday.

In that incident, a man alerted a patrol officer that his friend was being assaulted by several other men near the corner of Maple Avenue and Second Street. When police arrived on scene, the assailants had fled on foot, taking the victim’s cash and cell phone, officials said.

The victim, also a Hispanic male, had described the men who assaulted him as all black males between the ages of 19 and 20 years old. One was allegedly dressed in all black and another was wearing red pants. The victim said he had been punched and kicked repeatedly about the face during the assault, officials said.

Last Thursday, another Hispanic man reported being mugged by a group of people — two black men and two black females — near the rail road tracks on Osborn Avenue, police said.

And last year, a string of assaults had occurred on or near the railroad tracks — often times including Hispanic victims.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incidents or may have information about the assaults is asked to call Riverhead Detectives at 727-4500.
