Edward J. Powers

Former Aquebogue resident Edward J. Powers of Calverton died Dec. 15 at Stony Brook University Medical Center. He was 84. 

The son of Patrick and Rose Powers, he was born Nov. 23, 1931, in Brooklyn. He graduated from Southampton College in 1972.

Mr. Powers served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1954. He worked as a land management specialist for the Suffolk County Department of Real Estate.

He was past president of the Riverhead Republican Club and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Family members said he loved golf, boating and collecting lighthouses and enjoyed Riverhead High School and Riverhead PAL football.

Predeceased by his sister Veronica Cinquegrana, Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (née Fuller); his children, Maura Frankman of Riverhead, Edward, of Jamesport and Maribeth Vail of Riverhead; his sisters Marion Murnane of Tennessee and Joan Reese of Southold; and 11 grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, Dec. 20, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at Saint John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
