Editor’s picks: My favorite staff photos of 2015

This is the one photo I took that made this list this year. It probably has more to do with my bias toward its subject, Jerry Steiner, than one I have for myself. He is, without question, one of the most colorful characters downtown Riverhead has ever known. To put it into perspective, in one of the most recent photos we had taken of him before this one, he was shown sitting on a toilet reading a newspaper. In this shot, though, we see the joy he feels hamming it up for the camera talking about his pending retirement from the eyewear business. We also get the flavor of his shop with the NRA bumper sticker, the autographed and historic photos of community people, a cowboy hat and booze, lots of booze. Jerry likes to say he did it all for the ‘insanity.’ And insane it all was. He will be missed.
