Cops: Shoreham man killed in Brentwood crash

A Shoreham man whom police said was attempting to flee from a car accident died Sunday evening after his vehicle crashed into a nearby tree in Brentwood.

According to Suffolk County police, 50-year-old Anthony Lapicola was backing his 2010 Toyota RAV 4 out of a driveway on Candlewood Road in Brentwood about 4:45 p.m. when he struck a 2005 BMW that was headed east.

Police said Mr. Lapicola tried to flee the scene and drove away north on Bishop Road, but he crashed his vehicle into a tree at the intersection of Bishop Road and 9th Avenue.

The man was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead, according to a police report. The operator of the BMW was not injured in the initial crash.

Police are still investigating the fatal crash and have asked anyone with information on the incident to call the Suffolk County Police Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
