Irene Wilsberg

Irene Wilsberg of Mattituck passed away Feb. 3, 2016, at home surrounded by her family.

Irene was born April 20, 1921, in Brooklyn to Charles and Lena Kautter. She attended school in Brooklyn and later enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Upon completing basic training in 1942, Irene was part of the first group of women to transfer into the U.S. Coast Guard, where she remained until 1944, when she was discharged as a yeoman 2nd class.

Irene met her husband, Harold Wilsberg, while visiting Mattituck with friends. They were married in 1948 and lived in Mattituck since then.

Irene was an active member of Advent Lutheran Church in Mattituck. She was superintendent and a teacher in its Sunday school for several years, sang in the choir and participated in many successful bake sales and chicken barbecues.

She was also a 4-H leader and Cub Scout leader, and worked for many years as a Pink Lady at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport.

In her spare time, Irene enjoyed reading, sewing, painting, traveling and going to the theater.

Irene was predeceased by her brother, Charles, who died in 1942 on the USS Houston.

She is survived by her husband, Harold; her children: Judith (James) Woodhull of Southold, Ellen (Bill) Walker of Wilmington, N.C., Patricia Wilsberg of Mattituck, and William (Jacqueline) Wilsberg of Mattituck; six grandchildren, Kimberly (Gary) Leidahl, Amy (Mark) Schill, James (Annmarie) Woodhull, Christopher Fleming, Chelsea (Anthony) Chalone and Ashley (Anthony) Rutkowski; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were private and were handled by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice.
