Police: Riverhead residents affected by telephone scams

Two recent telephone scams are affecting Riverhead residents, town police said Saturday.

In the first telephone phone scam, the callers state they are from an internet cable or telephone service provider and request bank information in order to refund overcharges to the client, officials said.

As for the second, a scammer says they are holding a relative of the resident they’re calling hostage and require money wired to an account before they will release the alleged relative. Sometimes the person calling says there was a car accident and the hostage will be hurt if the money isn’t received or the police are called, officials said.

The police department asks residents to not give out personal account information over the phone and to contact the police if they receive a call of this nature.
