Peconic Bay Power Squadron offering ‘Using GPS’ class

For those of you who don’t feel completely comfortable following the navigation advice of a GPS while boating, the Peconic Bay Power Squadron is presenting a “Using GPS” boating seminar just for you.

The event, to be held at 1 p.m. on April 9 at West Marine in Riverhead, is part of the United States Power Squadron university seminar series and will focus on teaching attendees about GPS functions, screens, controls, courses and more.

According to the USPS, using GPS is noticeably different from using the navigation device in a car. Next month’s seminar will show students how to relate GPS to navigation charts, use waypoint navigation and access necessary functions that will keep boaters on a “safe, pre-qualified course.”

The seminar costs $15. Waterproof copies of McGraw-Hill Captain’s Quick Guide titled Using GPS will be available at an additional cost. Attendees are encouraged to register before April 1 by visiting www.pbps.us/education/schedule or by calling Vince Mauceri at (631) 725-3679.
