Cops: Traffic stop leads to drug arrest for woman with active warrant

The passenger in a vehicle pulled over for a traffic stop Monday was found to be in possession of heroin and methadone, Southampton Town police said.

At about 4 p.m. Monday, an officer stopped a vehicle with an expired inspection sticker. The officer noticed the vehicle was also unregistered, uninsured and the registration plates were incorrect, police said.

The passenger, Heather Lange, 27, of Medford was in possession of the drugs and she was arrested and charged with two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, both misdemeanors. The driver, Chelsey Gilbert, 29, of Medford, was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, a misdemeanor, police said.

Ms. Lange was released to Suffolk County Police to face an active warrant, police said. Ms. Lange faces two misdemeanor charges related to operating a vehicle with a suspended registration and failure to return a license plate, according to online court records. She failed to appear in court on Sept. 10, 2015 and a warrant was issued on Oct. 21, 2015, records show. She returned to court March 8 following her arrest to face her original charges. She is due back in court March 14.
