The southbound lanes of the Wading River Road bridge over Long Island Expressway near Exit 69 in Manorville were shut down Wednesday as the state Department of Transportation prepares to make safety repairs to the bridge.

The southbound lanes will be diverted into a single lane and shifted onto the northbound side of the bridge through April, according to the DOT. One northbound and one southbound lane will then be open on the northbound side while the repair work is underway.

Motorists are “urged to use alternate routes to help avoid travel delays,” according to a state DOT news release.

The state press release described the bridge project as a “preventive” measure that will “help ensure the longevity of this aging bridge and maintain the safety of motorists.”

As with most road work, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather. Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these travel lane closures, the DOT said.
