The Suffolk County Wrestling Coaches Association honored three Riverhead wrestlers for their excellence both in the classroom and on the mat.

The wrestlers were awarded scholarships at the 45th annual Section XI all-county wrestling dinner last week at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.

The winners of the Suffolk County Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar Athlete Awards were: Kerry Thomas, who wrestled at 120 pounds; Jaiden Blom, who wrestled at 195 and Mitch Hobbs, who wrestled at 152. To qualify, the wrestlers needed to be all-league and then those wrestlers were sorted by highest grade point average.

Thomas, Hobbs and Blom all placed third at the League III Tournament in February to earn all-league honors. Hobbs reached the quarterfinals of the Section XI Championships in his weight class before falling to eventual champion and No. 1 seed Chris Mauriello of Hauppauge. Hobbs went 3-2 in the tournament. Blom had two wins in the tournament and Thomas won once.

Thomas’ scholarship was for $500 and Hobbs and Blom received $300.
