Calverton News: Wishing the new Riverhead Raceway owners best of luck

Riverhead Raceway

What a great weekend. I hope we have all recovered from our aches and pains doing yard work. It really was a beautiful, beautiful weekend.

For all you racing fans, Riverhead Raceway has practice this weekend for the first time in 2016. I’d like to wish its new owners the very best of luck. We can’t wait to see what you’ve done with the track. Of course, my hopes are high for Scott Kulesa; my son, Robbie; and their pit crew for a great season in the late model division. Good luck, guys.

Earth Day falls on April 22 this year. Did you know this is the 46th year we’ve celebrated on the 22nd? I encourage everybody to get out there and plant something, even if it’s a potato from your pantry.

Baiting Hollow Congregational Church will hold its annual yard sale Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be over 50 vendors and I’ve gotta tell you — this is a great yard sale. If you’re interested in having a table, you can go to the church thrift store, which is open Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., or call Julia at 631-258-8881. The yard sale’s rain date is Saturday, May 14, but I have high hopes that we will have a great sunny day.

Congratulations to Kent Animal Shelter, which received a grant from Pet Peeves Inc. for providing veterinary care to homeless animals. Between 75 and 100 animals will receive this care. Did you know that each animal adopted from Kent is vaccinated, spayed or neutered, vetted and tested before they go home with their new families? That’s a lot of care before you can enjoy your new friend. So thank you very much, Pet Peeves. And thanks to everyone who attended the shelter’s Evening of Comedy, which was sold out for the third year in a row and raised $6,500 for Kent. That is totally awesome. Thank you so much to all who participated in this fun night.

Congratulations to Davi Lyn and Richard Shore, who have welcomed a brand-new baby boy into their lives. Richard Ellis Shore was born Friday, April 15, weighing in at 8 pounds, 2 ounces and 20 inches long. Congratulations to not only mom and dad, but all of his grandmas and grandpas. I’m sure he’s going to have a great time with all his cousins.

To all who celebrate Passover, I wish you a beautiful holiday. Enjoy!

That’s all for this week. I hope it stays warm — it feels really good. Be safe, take care and I’ll talk to you next time.
