The Riverhead Chamber Orchestra won the Worldstrides Onstage Heritage Festival’s highest honor during its competition last month in Boston, district officials announced Wednesday.

Riverhead earned the Outstanding Orchestra Award after winning more points in the contest than any other school during the competition held April 22-24.

The school’s chamber orchestra also won the Adjudicator Award and has been invited to attend the Festival of Gold event, which takes place in some of the most famous venues in the country. World-renowned music educators also attend the festival.

Student Nikita Sipiaguine also took home a Maestro Award and the school Festival Sweepstakes awards.

“The other ensembles who competed were of a much higher caliber compared to festivals in which we’ve participated previously,” said Riverhead High School orchestra director Marisa Macchio. “I was thoroughly impressed by the festival itself and how all of our students performed.”

Riverhead High School chorus director Dena Tishim added: “Not only did the adjudicators share excellent feedback about each musical performance, but the students got to walk the Freedom Trail and experience the history of the town of Boston — from the Science Museum to Paul Revere’s house. These students truly experienced something that was a once in a lifetime experience and will not be forgotten.”
