Calverton news: It’s asparagus time

In case you haven’t noticed, local asparagus is ready and it’s simply delicious. Maybe it’s due to the colder temps this year, but it’s just about the very best I’ve ever seen and tasted. Take a trip to your local farm stands and get some. Spinach is also available and it’s delicious as well.

Congratulations to my good friend Christina Spindler of Peconic River Herb Farm in Calverton. Last Sunday she celebrated her 30th year in business. I can remember how happy I was to have another businesswoman just down the road from me and we became great friends. Keep up the great work!

If you’re in the mood to see a good play, my friend Patti Hautsch will be performing in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” at North Fork Community Theatre in Mattituck. It’s a very funny play, so head on out for a few good laughs.

Riverhead Raceway finally celebrated its opening night on Saturday. It was great to head back there with all our friends. It was a bit chilly but we all made it. Best of luck to everyone this season!

Here’s a couple tips concerning hummingbirds. Like I’ve said before, their feeders need to be kept very clean. Also, there’s no need to buy expensive sugar water for them when you can make your own. Just boil four cups of water mixed with one cup of sugar, let cool, and fill the feeder. Store any leftover sugar water in the fridge for whenever you need it.

Manorville lost a really great guy this past week. Johnny Moretti, you’ll be so very missed. My love to his family. I’m so very sorry for your loss.

Condolences also go out to the family of Tim Losee. Tim was a great guy and he shall remain in our hearts.

My next column will have an early deadline due to the Memorial Day holiday. If you have any news for me for the June 2 issue, it needs to get to me by 10 a.m. Friday, May 27. Thanks!

That’s all for this week. Be safe and I’ll talk to you next time. Take care. Bye.
