Southampton launches parking ticket amnesty program

Parking ticket scofflaws who have been dreading to pay late fines on Southampton Town parking tickets will get some relief over the next two months.

Beginning June 1 and running through the end of July, parking violators will be allowed to pay their delinquent tickets with only an additional $5.00 administrative charge, according to a town press release.

“For example, if the original summons was for $100, violators will pay $105,” the release states. “This amnesty program waives any additional penalties.”

“There are also great costs to the town to collect past due parking violation penalties,” Supervisor Jay Schneiderman said. “The amnesty program allows the town to collect those overdue fees with minimal court costs and administrative time.”

In 2012, Southampton Town ran a similar successful amnesty program and recovered more than 50 percent of the outstanding fines.

For this year’s program, violations from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2015 are eligible for the amnesty program. Town officials say an estimated 2,300 parking tickets issued during that time still haven’t been paid.

Notices are expected to go out to residents with outstanding tickets inviting them to participate in the program.

Tickets can be paid online at www.paycourtonline.com, or checks can be made out to Southampton Town Justice Court and mailed to 32 Jackson Avenue, Hampton Bays, NY 11946. For more information about the amnesty program, call 1-888-912-1541.
