Riverhead News: BBQ for First Congregational Church restoration

The Riverhead Fire Department Association held its monthly meeting May 10 at headquarters. It was a special evening for John Kurpetski, who celebrated 50 years of service with the department. He received proclamations from the fire commissioners, Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter, state Sen. Ken LaValle, Gov. Cuomo’s office, Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo and Congressman Lee Zeldin, who also gave him a flag. Washington Engine Co. 2 hosted a dinner for John before the meeting. Guests included his family and brother firefighters. Sean Walter said John was “an example of someone giving back to the community” while another presenter stated that John’s being a police officer — since retired — and firefighter was not without sacrifice. It was a beautiful evening. As a thank-you, John’s wife, Pat, was presented with a floral arrangement.

Riverhead Free Library held its 120th annual association meeting on May 10. It was a special event for staff members, who received a pin and a certificate recognizing their years of service. Maureen Karpilovsky, secretary of the RFL board of trustees, was honored for her three years of dedicated service and was presented with a certificate of appreciation, a gift card and an orchid plant, among other gifts. The trustees wished her well as her three-year term will expire June 30 and she will be pursuing other endeavors. Her son, Matthew, was also honored for his volunteer service. He was presented with a certificate of appreciation and a gift card for all the photographs he took at the many library events held over the last couple of years.
