Betty Jane Kalin

Former Greenport resident Betty Jane Kalin, died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Mattituck on May 30, 2016. She was 89.

She was born Nov. 16, 1926, to James and Emily Albin in Mattituck, graduated from Mattituck High School in 1945 and attended Brown’s Business School.

Betty worked for Cornell Cooperative Extension in Riverhead before her marriage to Herbert Kalin of Greenport on June 18, 1950. After her husband’s death, she worked for Greenport Village as a secretary and at Holy Trinity Church in Greenport as a teacher’s aide.

She resided in Greenport from 1950 to 2009 when she moved in to the home of her daughter and son-in-law. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles and oil painting until she was diagnosed with macular degeneration in the late 1980s.

Betty was a member of Greenport United Methodist Church. In later years, she enjoyed meeting with the Blind and Sighted Group in Aquebogue and the VIP Group in Peconic.

Predeceased by her husband Herb who was murdered in 1981; she is survived by her children, Jim (Carol) of Greenport, Lew (Irene) of Milan, Ohio, Susan Zaborowski of Riverhead and Betsy (Rich) Perkins of Mattituck. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, June 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3, at Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Caren Heacock, Pastoral Associate will officiate. Interment will be in the Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.
