Ambulance crash leaves two injured on Route 58

At least one person was hospitalized following a crash involving an ambulance at the intersection of Route 58 and Harrison Avenue in Riverhead Saturday morning. 

The crash, which occurred shortly before 11 a.m., involved an Emergency Ambulance Service vehicle heading south on Harrison Avenue and a red SUV apparently heading east on Route 58. No patients were inside the ambulance at the time of the crash, according to officials at the scene.

A Wading River Fire Department ambulance transported one crash victim to a local hospital with minor injuries, and officials said two people suffered minor injuries in the crash. The SUV also suffered front end damage.

Police temporarily closed off traffic to Harrison Ave, south of Route 58, but the scene was cleared about 11:35 a.m.

Emergency Ambulance Service is a private company based in Hampton Bays, which provides coverage in Suffolk, Nassau and Queens.

Police at the scene declined to give additional details about the crash.
