Town may push Cardboard Boat Race back to July 31

The Riverhead Town Board may reschedule the annual Cardboard Boat Race from June 26 to July 31 because the water is expected to be low tide on the original race date.

The board discussed the issue at its work session Thursday but made no final decision. Officials are also concerned the low tide may coincide with another fish kill, which delayed last year’s event.

The Paddle Battle, also in Peconic River, is scheduled for July 30, a Saturday, so both events could benefit from the rescheduling, officials said.

The board also discussed the town’s 225th anniversary celebration in 2017 and discussed potentially shifting review authority for subdivision applications at the Enterprise Park at Calverton from the Planning Board to the Town Board to hasten the review process.
