Riverhead implements water restrictions for lawn irrigation

The Riverhead Water District is asking residents and business owners to only water their lawns on alternating days to help conserve the town’s water supply.

The plan calls for property owners with odd street numbers to only water lawns on odd calendar days and for residents with even street numbers to water their lawns on even calendar days.

“We are asking customers to reduce outdoor water usage to ensure our ability to meet demand,” Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter said in a statement. “Water use doubles during hot spells, sometimes overtaxing our production capability.”

The water district is also asking customers to water their lawns during the early day or late evening hours, as well as refrain from watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
