Cops: Riverhead man faces felony charge after stealing wallets

Southold Town police arrested a Riverhead man in connection with a theft at Magic Fountain on Main Road in Mattituck earlier this month.

Charles Kendall Johnson, 31, allegedly stole two wallets from a vehicle on Aug. 6 and both wallets and contents were valued in excess of $1,300, police said. Mr. Johnson was arrested in Riverhead and transported to police headquarters where he was processed and released on bail.

He faces a felony grand larceny charge, police said.

Police released a surveillance image last week of two potential suspects and Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offered a $5,000 reward. Police said the other man identified during the investigation was not involved in the theft and no other arrests are expected.

Police originally said the victim left a purple Coach bag on the hood her car at Magic Fountain. Two men gout out of the truck and went inside the ice cream shop, but when they left, one of the people snatched the bag. The bag contained credit cards, an iPhone 6, house keys, identification cards and $300 in cash, police previously said.
