Jamesport FD: Extensive damage caused by fire at Lumber+Salt

An early morning blaze destroyed a building on the Lumber + Salt property Tuesday, according to the Jamesport Fire Department.

Chief John Andrejack said that when members of the department arrived on scene shortly before 3 a.m. the building at 5570 Sound Ave. in Jamesport had “pretty much burned almost to the ground.”

The flames were extinguished within 20 minutes, preventing the fire from spreading to an attached greenhouse and the main structure, Chief Andrejack said.

He added that the heat was so strong it was beginning to burn surrounding items, including timbers and a dumpster.

“We were able to get close because there’s a good parking lot in front, a good parking lot that wraps around the back of the structure and a hydrant right in front,” he said. “The conditions for fighting that fire were very good.”

All three of the department’s engines responded to the call, the chief said, arriving on the scene within nine minutes.

“They did a great job,” he said. “They very quickly got it under control before it spread because they’re well trained for it, well equipped for it. The size of the fire in the one structure and the fact that it’s attached to two other structures, to stop it like that the firefighters did a great job.”

Mattituck Fire Department assisted as mutual aid at Jamesport’s headquarters in case another call came through. Chief Andrejack said they remained at the location for hours after dousing the fire to secure the area.

The Riverhead Town fire marshal’s office is currently investigating the incident.

Owner John Mazur opened Lumber + Salt in April 2015. The space is home to a shop featuring repurposed antiques, collectibles and vintage building materials. Mr. Mazur also creates custom pieces for clients there.
