Riverhead and Shoreham-Wading River made history in February by competing in the inaugural Section XI Cheerleading Championships. Cheerleading officially became a sanctioned sport in 2015 and the girls got their first chance to compete at a Section XI competition this year when the top teams in the county came together at Longwood High School.

The championship featured four divisions and both Riverhead and Shoreham qualified by competing in various meets throughout the season.

The Wildcats, a relative newcomer to competitive cheerleading, placed second in Division II, small schools. Riverhead competed in the Division I, small school division. Rocky Point was the winner.

“When we found out we made it to this through all the Section XI competitions, we were really thrilled and excited for the first opportunity,” Riverhead senior Nicole Trypuc said after the competition.

Shoreham coach Tiffany Pelczar added, “We scratched to get to finals. It’s always been that battle. We don’t have a whole program. It’s varsity and that’s it. The level we’ve come to, especially this year, has been unbelievable.”

The cheerleaders will be aiming for a return trip to the Section XI Championships this year and possibly a trip to SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College for the state championships.
