Football: Wiederkehr, Gray named to All-USA New York team

The accolades keep coming for Shoreham-Wading River’s Ethan Wiederkehr.

The senior lineman, who helped lead the Wildcats to a third consecutive Long Island championship in November, was recently named the state’s Defensive Player of the Year by USA Today High School Sports. Wiederkehr, who will play for Northwestern next year, won two coveted awards last month at the Suffolk County Coaches Association’s all-county dinner.

Fellow senior Chris Gray was also named to the first team All-USA New York football team. The running back/defensive back was one of the finalists for the Hansen Award as the top player in Suffolk County. That award went to Sayville quarterback Jack Coan, who was named Offensive Player of the Year and the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year.

Wiederkehr made 91 tackles with eight sacks, nine pass deflections and a pair of forced fumbles.

Gray led Suffolk County in rushing with 2,234 yards and scored 37 touchdowns and had seven interceptions.

Wiederkehr and Gray were among 10 players from Long Island to be named to the All-USA New York Football team.
