Alma E. Nelson

Longtime Riverhead resident Mrs. Alma E. Nelson passed after a brief illness in Georgia Jan. 3, 2017, at age 100.

She was born April 15, 1916, in Powhatan County, Va., to Maria (Edmond) and Sam Jasey. In 1923, her family moved to Long Island, where she attended the old Calverton school. She married Norman Nelson in the 1930s and had one daughter, Betsy Crump.

Alma was a faithful member of Goodwill AME Zion Church on Flanders Road for over 70 years. She was a secretary for the Steward Board, member of the Opal Club and Opal Choir and a class leader over her many years of service. At the age of 90 she became “Mother of the Church.” The church and daily Bible reading was an important part of her long life.

Mrs. Nelson was predeceased by her husband of many years; her daughter; her grandson Charles Steven Crump; and all of her siblings, Sam, Charlie, Patricia and William. She leaves behind her faithful son-in-law, Charlie Crump; her grandsons Tony (Shirley) and Jayson (Shaun), all of Georgia; several great- and great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Jan. 6 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Mrs. Nelson was laid to rest Jan. 7 at Riverhead Cemetery with her beloved husband.
