Cops: Suspect charged with assault after stabbing in Riverhead

A man was stabbed inside a Riverhead sober home on East Second Street Sunday night and the suspect faces a felony assault charge, Rivehread Town police said.

Police arrested Philip Maletta, 51, for allegedly stabbing the victim in the stomach, police said. Officers responded to the home at about 9:29 p.m. and found the 45-year-old victim outside the home bleeding from the stab wound, police said. The victim was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment, police said.

Mr. Maletta was arrested at the scene and charged with one count of second-degree assault, police said. He was held for morning arraignment in Riverhead Justice Court, police said.

Mr. Maletta and the victim both lived in the home, police said.
