Public hearing set on downtown Riverhead parking proposal

Parking in parts of the Riverfront parking lot in downtown Riverhead will have tighter parking restrictions under a proposal that will now face a public hearing.

The three-hour parking limit currently is in effect between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. for 60 parking spaces immediately south of the stores between Summerwind and PeraBell Food Bar.

Now the Riverhead Town Board is proposing to change the time to 8 a.m. to midnight. The restrictions only apply from Monday through Friday.

Some downtown business owners have complained that under the current limits, if someone parks at 5 p.m., for instance, they’d be able to legally stay in that spot until 8 a.m. the next morning. Business owners also say the limits aren’t being enforced.

The hearing is scheduled for the April 18 Town Board meeting, which starts at 7 p.m.
