Riverhead Town to consider parking ban on portion of Peconic Bay Boulevard

The Riverhead Town Board will consider a recommendation to prohibit parking on a section of Peconic Bay Boulevard in Jamesport.

The proposed restriction would not allow parking on the south side of Peconic Bay Boulevard beginning at the road’s intersection with South Jamesport Avenue, extending east and ending 200 feet past the entrance to South Jamesport Beach.

Riverhead Parks and Recreation Superintendent Ray Coyne said that some drivers that drop off their boats at the town’s ramps do not pay for permits to park at the East Creek boat launch.

“If they’re going to park along Peconic Bay Boulevard it’s going to be a mess,” he said Thursday at a Town Board work session. He said drivers making a left turn out of the boat launch’s parking lot have a “blind view” when vehicles are parked on the south side of the road.

“Let’s see how it works,” Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter said.

The Town Board will vote on Tuesday to pass a resolution scheduling a May 17 public hearing on the proposed limit.
