Geraldine E. “Peaches” Carter

Geraldine E. ‘Peaches’ Carter

Peaches’ work here is done. She received a call, a sort of offer you can’t refuse, for an appointment from which she will not be returning. This assignment comes with a huge sign-on bonus; a reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a long time. Job security is exactly 110 percent. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place where she will be socializing, cooking, taking charge and relaxing to her heart’s content. Music, laughter and love are guaranteed. Food is delicious and you never gain an ounce. She left detailed instructions for her friends and family to celebrate her mission, which has now been completed. Low adherence to this instruction will not be tolerated.

Peaches was a faithful and dedicated member of Clinton Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenport who truly loved the Lord. She served as president of the missionary board, class leader and a member of steward and usher Boards. She proudly co-chaired a successful “Women’s Day.”

Peaches served on the board for E.O.C./CAST from 1968 to 1977, dutifully for nine years. She was employed by Eastern Long Island Hospital for nine years before moving to Queens in 1979 where she worked as a home health aide for four years. In 1984, Peaches joined Lackmann Food Service, Inc. as an exceptional manager before retiring in 2002. In 2003, she assumed a position at Plum Island Animal Disease Center of New York for a few years before working for Commander Cody’s in Shelter Island, where she worked until she became ill. Peaches worked very hard all her life, up until the very end.

Peaches was very blessed and loved by many due to her selfless spirit and warm presence. She was wise beyond years which she learned from her late grandmother.

Formerly of Greenport and a current resident of Riverhead, Peaches was born June 18, 1953, and departed this life Jan. 9, 2018. She was predeceased by her beloved grandparents, Geraldine “Pinky” and Walter Engleton; sisters Darlene Shelby Jackson and Patricia Ann Vories and godson Andrew Crenshaw. She leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Earline Hepburn; aunt, Hattie McKnight; uncle, Arthur Shelby Jr.; son, Rodney Shelby (Keysha); daughter, Angela Smith; three grandsons, Ryan Creighton, Jalen Shelby and Sylas Shelby; three granddaughters, Rynese Smith, Brenna Shelby and Darlene Shelby; one great-granddaughter, Milania Shelby; a special niece, Ramona Myers (Darryl); four sisters, Sarah Hill, Sabrina Crenshaw, Christine Shelby (John) and Mary Shelby; five brothers, Hanson Postwaite, James Postwaite, Lawrence Shelby (Lorna), Nathanial Beckwith and Charles Shelby; two godchildren Paula Parks and Latonia Jackson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home assisted the family.
