Southampton Blotter: DWI arrests in Riverside, Flanders

A Riverhead man was arrested for drunken driving last Thursday after he was stopped on Vail Avenue in Riverside, police said.

Larry Hughes, 52, was stopped for a traffic infraction when police smelled alcohol on his breath and saw his eyes were red and glassy, police said. He was found to be intoxicated and driving with a revoked license, police said.

Mr. Hughes was charged with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a felony, and DWI, police said.

• A Riverhead man was arrested last Sunday in Flanders for driving under the influence of drugs while there were two passengers under the age of 16 in the car, police said.

Pieter Williams, 18, was driving on Flanders Road around 4:30 a.m. when he was stopped for a traffic infraction, police said.

Upon investigation, police detected a strong odor of marijuana and smoke coming from the vehicle, authorities said. Mr. Williams was found to be impaired, police said. Police also found two bags of marijuana in Mr. Williams’ glove box, officials said.

Mr. Williams was charged with aggravated DWI, operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

• A Middle Island man was arrested last Thursday in Flanders after he was found carrying multiple controlled substances following a traffic stop on Oak Avenue, police said.

Darnell Coles, 25, was pulled over for multiple traffic infractions when police found he was driving with a suspended license after he backed into a driveway and attempted to get out of his vehicle, officials said.

He was taken to police headquarters, where a search found he was carrying multiple controlled substances, police said. Police could not name the controlled substances pending lab review.

Mr. Coles was charged with four counts of misdemeanor seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration and four violations, according to police.

• Samantha Emerick, 28, of Riverhead was arrested and charged with third-degree unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle last Wednesday after she was stopped for a traffic violation on County Road 104 in Flanders, police said.

• Walter Xitumul-Augustin, 29, of Riverhead was arrested and charged with third-degree unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle last Friday after he was found to be driving without a license during a traffic stop on Flanders Road in Riverside, police said.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
