Schools on a 2-hour delay Thursday

With snow still falling Wednesday night on the East End, schools have already decided on a delayed start on Thursday morning.

Riverhead and Shoreham-Wading River school districts and Bishop McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School are all on a two-hour delay.

In Shoreham-Wading River, there will be no morning pre-kindergarten and no before-school program.

A combination of snow and sleet fell this afternoon, but it turned to snow as dusk fell. Two to six inches of snow is expected to fall before it tapers off between 8 p.m. and midnight. Northern and western sections of Suffolk County received the highest amounts.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Riverhead area until 4 a.m. on Thursday, and a coastal flood advisory is in effect until 6 a.m.
All schools, except Bishop McGann-Mercy, were opened on Wednesday, but many canceled after-school activities.

Thursday is expected to be partly sunny, with a high near 44.
