UPDATE (11 a.m. May 11): MTA police on Friday identified the man who was found dead Tuesday night as 41-year-old Vincent O’Dowd, who was homeless. A cause of death was not released.

Original story: Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a body found on the Long Island Rail Road train platform in Riverhead Tuesday night, according to a LIRR spokesperson.

A passerby reported the body, which police identified as a 41-year-old man, at 10:37 p.m.

Police did investigate a report that a person had been struck, but that was not the case, the spokesperson said. The cause of the man’s death is not clear at this time, but it was not due to a train strike, they confirmed. His identity has not been publicly released.

An investigation is ongoing, the spokesperson said.
