Eleanor Mae Papish

Eleanor Mae Papish passed peacefully at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola after a full life on July 15. She was 90.

Ellie was a resident of Mattituck since 1960, and the loving wife of Kenneth “Bud” Papish for 61 years. She took care of both her husband and mother, Susan Van Den Bosch, who predeceased her after both had suffered with Alzheimer’s disease.

A devoted mother of two, she was active in the community, most especially in Home Bureau in Mattituck. She loved to sew and taught piano lessons as well. Ellie was also a bookkeeper for the family business, Island Forklifts Inc. where she worked right up until her death.

Ellie was a resident of Hempstead through her childhood. She was crowned Miss Cherry Blossom in Washington D.C. in the 1940s.

She is survived by her two children, Glenn and Susan, and their spouses,Nina and Bill; three grandchildren, Carly, Molly and Kyle; as well as her dearest friend since high school, Helen Duryea of Jamesport. She will be missed by all, including her two cats, Missy and Little Boy.

The family will receive visitors on Friday, July 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.  The funeral service will take place on Saturday, July 21, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, officiated by Caren Heacock. Interment will follow at New Bethany Cemetery in Mattituck.

In lieu of flowers, kindly consider making a donation to Mattituck Fire Department Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
