Antone F. Bugdin

Antone F. Bugdin of Riverhead died Aug. 30, 2018 at Peconic Bay Medical Center after a long illness. He was 85.

The son of Antone and Josephine (Glover), he was born May 11, 1933 in Jamesport.

He graduated from Riverhead High School in 1952. He enlisted in the Navy and served from 1952-1956.

He joined the Riverhead Fire Department Washington Engine Co., #2 in 1957. After serving his company as captain for eight years, he became chief of the department from 1976-1978. He was active in the Ironmen and Virgins drill teams, bowling team and a pitcher on the softball team. In addition, he received gallon pins for donating blood. He also coached Little League baseball and enjoyed gardening and golfing.

He worked for Riverhead Building Supply for over 50 years. He started in 1950, working after school at its original location on Ostrander Avenue.

On Aug. 9, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Barczak. They had two children.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years; son James, of Riverhead; daughter Sharon (Russ) Hetherington, of Youngstown, Fla.; two granddaughters, Laura (Edward) Knoedler and Lisa Bugdin; and two great-grandsons, Kellan and Preston Knoedler.

The family received visitors Sept. 4 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead with fire department services.

A funeral Mass will celebrated Sept. 5, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at the church cemetery, with military honors.

Memorial donations to Riverhead Fire Department or Suffolk County Burn Unit at Stony Brook University Hospital would be appreciated.
