Supervisor recognizes direct support professionals

Before a town board work session Thursday, Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith honored a group from the East End Disabilities Association with a proclamation, declaring the week of Sept. 9 through 15 as “Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week” in Riverhead.

Direct support professionals provide long-term support to individuals with mental health issues and disabilities, often helping to prepare meals, assist with medications, personal hygiene, mobility and transportation, the supervisor said. Their work is “often the difference between community participation and isolation,” Ms. Jens-Smith said.

In helping their patients lead self-directed lives, Direct Support Professionals also advocate for inclusion and community involvement.

“Direct support professionals week is an opportunity to recognize the work of those who ensure inclusive environments with equal access to all,” she said. “We extend our appreciation for their contributions that help thousands overcome challenges and reach their full potential.”
