Anthony DiPierro

Anthony DiPierro, born April 27, 1928, passed away at Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson, N.Y., on Dec. 1, 2012, after battling pulmonary fibrosis for several years.

A lifelong resident of Wading River, N.Y., he was a proud decorated veteran of the Korean War, serving as sergeant in the U.S. Army in several decisive battles on the front lines. After a 34-year career at Brookhaven National Laboratory, he and his bride, Catherine (née McCarthy), designed and moved into their dream retirement home. Anthony and Catherine, the love of his life, shared a too-short 62-year marriage.

Anthony was passionate about caring for his home and was usually found working in his yard, the envy of the neighborhood. He could stick almost anything in the ground and make it flourish.

Anthony’s passion for caring for his home was greatly surpassed by his love of his extensive family. He had 10 brothers and sisters. Brothers Joseph, Steve and Dan and sisters Teresa and Rose predeceased him. He is survived by brothers Peter, Leo, Gerald and Nicholas and sister Nancy. Other survivors are his son, Anthony Jr., and his wife, Smita, of Long Valley, N.J.; his daughter, Kathleen, and husband, James Scott Hygom, of Mattituck, N.Y.; and grandchildren Ryan Hygom, Moneika DiPierro and Lauren Hygom.

After services at St. John the Baptist Church in Wading River, Anthony was interred with full military honors at Calverton National Cemetery on Dec. 5. Arrangements were handled by Alexander-Tuthill Funeral Home in Wading River.
