To the editor:

The Feb. 12 editorial stated in its headline “We can’t arrest our way out of a gang problem.” You’re partly right, but the problem is not arrests, it’s convictions and incarceration. Less love and more locks. Your article notes that drug and weapons defendant Darius Strong recently got off parole. (more…)

Regarding the recent downfall of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver highlighted in last week’s editorial and the lack of disclosure on the part of some of our local elected officials, there seems to be one common thread: They are all lawyers or connected to legal firms.

The lead and front page story in last week’s issue struck a very sad chord. Until I read that story, I wasn’t aware that my friend George Kurovics was still with us, continuing to give traditional “Navy” haircuts in his Rocky Point barber shop. (more…)

Bravo to the News-Review and Grant Parpan for his op/ed challenging Congressman Lee Zeldin for not immediately distancing himself from Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise. Mr. Scalise, the majority whip in Congress, gave a speech in 2002 before an organization in Louisiana associated with David Duke, a nationally known white supremacist who has been associated with the Klu Klux Klan. This organization, the European-American Unity and Rights Organization (EURO), has been labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a white nationalist hate group.
