Update (12:36 p.m.): 

Riverhead Town Fire Marshal David Andruszkiewicz, who was investigating the scene, said there were 10 people inside the mobile home at the time of the fire.

“It was a stove fire,” he said. “We can’t be specific where in the stove, but we bring the origin back to the stove.”

He added that he does not believe the renter had insurance on the property.

A stove fire that broke out around 1:30 a.m. destroyed a mobile home and left a family with four young children homeless.

Fifty firefighters arrived on the scene, off Harrison Avenue in Riverhead, to battle the blaze that is believed to have started in the kitchen, according to Riverhead Fire Chief Peter Jackman. READ

Shoreham-Wading River may have a peculiar case of senioritis this high school boys basketball season, and it’s not a bad thing.

The Wildcats (8-12 last season) have a senior-laden team this season, with eight 12th-graders among them. Coach Kevin Culhane is more than fine with that. READ

Rescuers were searching for two men who were swept out to the Long Island Sound while fishing near a boat launch in Wading River Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

An 18-year-old man, a 20-year-old man and a third man were fishing near the shore off Creek Road when an outgoing current swept them away. The third man was able to hold onto a rock, but the water was too much for the other two. Witnesses on the beach then called 911. READ
